Our Founder

About us Jess pic.png

I first learned to teach batik, tie-dye, and shibori while working at Gwynn Valley Camp in the early 2000s, and I came back year after year to continue my studies in the crafts programs there. Eventually I was hired to head up the crafts program, and was so inspired by what I was doing that I decided to earn a Masters degree in Crafts Education at Prescott College in Arizona (2008). I learned so much about how we learn as makers, how crafting positively effects our brains and our self-esteem, and about the handmade movement specifically in Southern Appalachia in the last century. All of this, plus my undergraduate degree in teaching theatre arts, means that I can give you an entertaining, in-depth, and well-paced course full of insight and experience.”                                               -Jess

WAXON Studio founder and owner Jessica Kaufman is earning her entrepreneurial stripes one day at a time as she leads WAXON into its future iterations. Always learning, always busy, Jess strives to make each customer and client’s experience at our studio one that is supportive, engaging, educational, and uplifting.

“What an amazing experience! Sam, our instructor, was smart and friendly. The class took about 1.25 hours, but if needed we could have stayed longer. It is not inexpensive, but quality products and experiences seldom are.”

“Myself and 6 friends had a blast tie dyeing with Jess! The final products were amazing, and the instruction was individualized and easy to follow. She is detail oriented, and so much fun to work with. Pretty soon my whole wardrobe will be WAXON pieces! Can’t wait to come back for another class!”
